7-Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Machame Route
Overview
Conquer Africa’s highest peak on this 7-day Machame Route adventure. Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its challenging yet rewarding trek, Machame offers breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and excellent acclimatization. From lush rainforest to alpine desert and the icy summit of Uhuru Peak, this journey is an unforgettable challenge for adventure seekers.
Day 1 – Machame Gate → Machame Camp
Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m).
Registration and start trekking through lush rainforest.
Hike: 11 km (approx. 5-6 hours)
Elevation: 1,800m → 3,000m
Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.
Day 2 – Machame Camp → Shira Camp
Trek through moorland with stunning views of Kibo Peak.
Hike: 5 km (approx. 4-5 hours)
Elevation: 3,000m → 3,840m
Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 3 – Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
Gradual climb to Lava Tower for acclimatization.
Descend to Barranco Camp, passing through the alpine desert.
Hike: 10 km (approx. 6-7 hours)
Elevation: 3,840m → 4,630m (Lava Tower) → 3,960m
Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 4 – Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall and trek across ridges and valleys.
Hike: 5 km (approx. 4-5 hours)
Elevation: 3,960m → 4,035m
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 5 – Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
Steady climb to Barafu, the base camp for the summit attempt.
Hike: 4 km (approx. 3-4 hours)
Elevation: 4,035m → 4,680m
Early dinner and rest before midnight summit push.
Day 6 – Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Midnight start for summit attempt via Stella Point.
Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa.
Descend to Barafu for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Hike: 17 km (approx. 12-15 hours)
Elevation: 4,680m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 7 – Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi/Arusha
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Receive summit certificates.
Transfer to Moshi/Arusha.
Hike: 10 km (approx. 3-4 hours)
Elevation: 3,100m → 1,640m
